Life Insurance for Seniors in NJ — Options That Fit Your Age, Health, and Budget
Whether you want to cover funeral costs, protect a spouse, leave something for the grandkids, or plan for long-term care, there's usually an option that fits. Kevin Gaviria compares A-rated insurers and explains them in English or Spanish.
Four Kinds of Coverage Seniors Use
- Final expense insurance: small whole life policies, often $5,000–$25,000, with simple health questions and no medical exam on many plans. Premiums don't go up, and coverage doesn't expire.
- Guaranteed issue: no health questions, higher cost, and a waiting period before the full benefit applies. Best when health rules out other options.
- Guaranteed universal life (GUL): lifetime coverage for larger amounts at a lower price than whole life, for people in reasonable health.
- Term life: for a set number of years, available into the 70s with some insurers, for a mortgage or a spouse's income.

Planning for Long-Term Care
Nursing home and in-home care in New Jersey can cost thousands of dollars a month. Insurance options include:
Chronic illness riders
Many life policies can advance part of the death benefit if you can't perform daily activities without help.
Hybrid life / LTC policies
Permanent life insurance with a long-term care benefit built in. If you never need care, your family receives the death benefit.
Standalone LTC insurance
Dedicated long-term care coverage. Usually the most care benefit per dollar, but premiums can increase.
Start earlier than you think. Long-term care coverage depends on health, and it gets harder to qualify for with age.
Tips Kevin Gives Every Senior Client
Do
- Answer health questions honestly: it protects the claim
- If you qualify for a simplified issue policy, it usually beats guaranteed issue
- Name a beneficiary, and tell them where the policy is
- Set premiums on a date that matches your Social Security deposit
- Keep your old policy until the new one is approved
Watch out for
- "Guaranteed acceptance" ads often mean a waiting period
- Very low teaser prices may be for tiny benefits
- Some policies' premiums rise with age; final expense usually doesn't
- Accidental-death-only plans don't pay for most deaths
- Pressure to "act today" is a red flag
Senior Life Insurance Questions
Yes. Final expense whole life is commonly available up to about age 85, and some term and guaranteed universal life policies are available into your 70s. The options and prices depend on your age and health.
Coverage with no health questions. It's easy to get, but it costs more per dollar of coverage and usually has a waiting period (often two to three years) during which death from natural causes pays back premiums plus interest instead of the full benefit. If you can answer health questions, a simplified issue policy is usually a better value.
For funeral and final expenses, many people choose $10,000–$25,000. If a spouse depends on your pension or Social Security, or you want to leave a set amount to family, you may want more. Kevin helps you size it on the call.
Common options are a standalone long-term care policy, a hybrid life/long-term care policy, a chronic illness or long-term care rider on a life policy, personal savings, and, after spending down assets, Medicaid. Each has trade-offs; Kevin can explain the insurance options.
Not without a review. Never cancel an existing policy until a new one is approved and in force. Sometimes keeping the old policy is the better deal.
Important: General education, not tax, legal, or investment advice. Policy features, riders, and availability vary by insurance company and state, and all coverage is subject to underwriting. Cash value, loans, and withdrawals reduce the death benefit and can cause a policy to lapse. Guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Kevin does not provide Medicaid planning or legal advice.
